Are we what we eat? It seems like a bit of a silly thing to say but we are really, as well as being what we drink, how we live and how we treat ourselves. It’s not always the case that we feel particularly unhealthy if we eat junk food, smoke and drink alcohol excessively but it can manifest itself in bad skin, yellow teeth and dry or greasy hair. To maintain healthy skin, hair, nails and teeth, it is really important that we get a good intake of vitamins and minerals – things we can get easily from eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and following a varied diet. Vitamin supplements should not be required if you are in good health and eating well.
If you’re the water baby type and love swimming but don’t love the damage it does to your hair, there are a couple of top tips that means you can swim and have great looking hair. Firstly, wet your hair in the shower before getting the pool or sea, this way your hair will soak up the clean, fresh water rather than chlorinated water or salty sea water. Other things you can do include wearing a swimming cap and buying one or two of the various protective serums on offer, which lock in natural moisture and block out harmful chemicals.
Anyone who uses a hairdryer or hair straighteners will know that they’re not the best devices for hair health, but we also know that realistically we wouldn’t give them up in a hurry. So to minimise damage, definitely invest in a protective spray, these are not the grease-inducing, sticky concoctions they once were and can actually add that extra healthy glow to hair without adding weight or unwanted conditioning. The other important thing is to blow dry with warm and not hot air; it might take a bit longer for your hair to dry but it’ll be worth it when you see less of your hair on the hair brush and more of it left on your head. Even the best hair straighteners cause some damage by their very nature but the better the brand and the better your surrounding hair care routine, the better.
Use the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type – this might sound really basic but it’s amazing how many people go straight for the product offers without even looking at what type of hair the shampoo or conditioner is designed for. It is often a case of trial and error so get your friends involved – what doesn’t work for you might give them luscious locks to die for and vice versa. The other thing to do is take note of which brands and products they use on your hair at the hairdressers, while these might be a tad out of your price range, you can easily find discounted professional hair care products online.
